Each needs slightly different treatment.

One is a Story, TikTok’s 24-hour ephemeral format that surfaces through a blue ring on a creator’s profile picture. The other is a Photo Mode post, TikTok’s swipeable carousel of up to 35 photos, which sits in the main feed with a music track playing underneath.

Both are downloadable. The trick is knowing which one you are dealing with, because they live in different places and the link looks different.

Telling Them Apart Before You Start

This is the whole game. Get it right and the download takes fifteen seconds.

Photo Story. Appears through a blue ring around a creator’s profile picture on their profile, in the Following feed and in the inbox. Disappears after 24 hours unless the creator saved it as a Highlight. Can be a photo or a short video, with any text stickers overlaid.

Photo Mode post. Sits in the main feed like any other post and stays up indefinitely. Small dots along the bottom show multiple slides you swipe through, up to 35 in one post. Background music plays as you swipe.

The distinction is not cosmetic. TikTok itself covers Stories and Photo Mode as separate features in its help pages. Its rollout announcement for Stories framed them as a distinct 24-hour format.

Get this wrong and you will paste a link into a tool that cannot read it, then blame the tool.

How to Download a TikTok Photo Story

Photo Stories are the trickier of the two because they expire. You are working against a clock unless the creator saved that Story to their profile as a Highlight, which pins it permanently.

Copy the creator’s username. Open your browser and go to the TikTok Story Viewer.

Paste the username or @username into the search box.

Wait for the active stories to load in the gallery view.

Find the photo story you want and press the download button under it.

The image saves as JPG or PNG.

Two things to note. If the account is private, nothing loads. That is not the tool failing. It is the platform correctly restricting private content. And once the 24 hours are up, the file is gone from TikTok unless it was pinned as a Highlight, so no tool anywhere can recover a plain expired Story.

How to Download a Photo Mode Post

Photo Mode posts are easier because they do not expire, but the link matters.

TikTok documents Photo Mode as a swipeable format for photo posts. The post URL will look like tiktok.com/@username/photo/ followed by a long number, which is different from a video URL that uses /video/ instead.

Open the Photo Mode post in the TikTok app.

Tap the Share arrow on the right of the screen.

Choose Copy link.

Paste the link into the download TikTok Stories tool.

Every slide loads as a separate photo you can save individually.

You get the original file for each image rather than a screenshot of your own screen, so quality matches whatever the creator uploaded.

What Format the Files Save In

Both types come down as image files, not video files.

JPG in most cases. TikTok’s own docs list JPG and WebP as the accepted formats for Photo Mode posts. Nothing gets converted on the way through.

Original resolution. Whatever the source was, that is what lands on your device.

Vertical framing. Photo Mode holds the 9:16 aspect ratio the app displays them in.

One file per slide. A ten-photo Photo Mode post gives you ten separate images, not one bundled file.

Do not expect a single video file unless you specifically render one, which some tools offer as an extra option. The default is the raw images.

The Audio Is a Separate Question

Photo Mode posts carry a music track that plays as you swipe. That audio does not come down with the images.

If the sound is what you actually wanted, use the TikTok Music Downloader with the same post link and it will pull the audio out as an MP3. The guide on downloading audio from a TikTok slideshow covers that side properly.

Two saves from one link if you want both. No need to hunt for the sound elsewhere.

Why the Link Might Not Work

Almost every failure comes down to one of these.

You pasted a Story link into a video tool. Stories need the Story Viewer with a username, not the video downloader.

You pasted a Photo Mode link into the Story Viewer. Photo Mode uses the video downloader route because it needs a specific post URL.

The account is private. Public accounts only. This applies to every tool on the site.

The Story already expired. Once 24 hours are up, the file is deleted from TikTok itself.

The post was deleted. Same result. Nothing to fetch if the original is gone.

The creator disabled downloads. Photo Mode posts respect the same download setting videos do.

Watching Anonymously Is Its Own Thing

Downloading and viewing without being noticed are different jobs. People sometimes conflate them.

A browser tool loads public content without you being signed in, so nothing reaches the creator either way. The rundown of viewing TikTok stories anonymously covers what does and does not identify you.

For Stories specifically, watching in the TikTok app does put your username in the creator’s viewer list while the story is live. Downloading a story does not add anything extra to that. Watching in a browser does not add anything at all.

Respect the Content You Save

Downloading is quiet. That does not make the file yours.

The creator still owns what they posted. That does not change with the download.

Personal reference, offline viewing and saving something for yourself are ordinary uses.

Reposting somebody’s photos as your own is not.

Anything commercial needs permission from the creator first.

TikTok’s help documentation for Stories also notes that Stories can carry different sharing settings, so a story shared to a narrow audience was shared to that audience deliberately.

TikTok Photo Story FAQs

Do photo stories save as videos or images?

Photos save as JPG in most cases. Video Stories save as MP4 because Stories support up to 60 seconds of video too.

Can I get all the photos from a Photo Mode post in one go?

Yes. Every slide loads separately and each one downloads on its own. Some tools also offer a bundled ZIP option.

Will the creator know I saved their photo story?

No. There is no notification for downloads. Watching a live Story in the app does add your username to their viewer list though.

Why does my Story download come back as low quality?

The file matches what the creator uploaded. Some Stories are posted at low resolution and no tool can improve on the source.

Right Link, Right Tool, Right Away

Photo Story means username plus the Story Viewer, done before 24 hours are up. Photo Mode means full post link plus the video downloader, no deadline attached. That is really the whole thing.

Everything else is the same. Public accounts only, original quality, no watermark burned into the images and nothing sent back to the creator.

Open the TikTok Story Viewer for anything currently live. Head to the video downloader with a Photo Mode link ready.

Two different things get called a TikTok photo story.
